History

Gottfried Kinkel Straße

Alfred closed the financial year 1955 with a loss of DEM 18,228.74 (present value € 40,571). :!: See balance sheet Gottfried Kinkelstraße 1955.
There are some problems with the tenant of the Luisenhütte, Karl Görgen, which causes some resentment and Alfred has to hire a lawyer. At one point, Karl Görgen makes an offer of DEM 10,000 (current value € 21,682) to which Alfred answers laconically that the target price is at least DEM 40,000 (current value € 86,727). :!: See Luisenhütte.
He has to give up 3 metres of his land to the municipality to build a road. Again paperwork and deeds, as if Alfred didn't know what to do. Applying for a visa for France in order to be able to go to his customers to adjust glass ovens. Apply for a visa to go to his sister in the Netherlands and visit customers. It is clear that Alfred is out of the market and has little time. However, there is a bright spot: Alfred also finds a new partner, a widow who lives right next door to him. As a result, his frustration diminishes somewhat, but of course he continues to have headaches. Since 1952 there has been exactly nothing that sas a success, but he doesn't give up. :!: See photo gallery in the sidebar.

Am Fuchspfad

Alfred closed the financial year 1956 with a loss of DEM 10,309.40 (present value € 22,352). :!: See balance sheet am Fuchspfad 1956.

What work is Alfred doing during this period?

Alfred and his friend Fritz Jochmann (the latter is married and retired in the meanwhile) :!: See Jochmann) both breathe glass instead of oxygen. The composition of the glass mixture, the way the molten glass is processed, is a passion for them. To achieve this you must have a good furnace and be able to adjust it perfectly. Alfred can do this like no other. Whether you fire with gas or oil, Alfred knows how to adjust the ovens and makes huge savings in heating costs. This is what he gets to work with. A few examples:

  • Dorotheenhütte in Wolfach still exists today in the Black Forest. https://www.dorotheenhuette.info/ where you as a visitor can blow your own vase :!: See Dorotheenhütte.
  • Everex in Paris responds to Alfred's annonce in the well-known and popular trade journal 'Glas-Email-Keramo-Technik'. Presumably he got to know his friend Fritz Jochmann through this journal just after WWII. The latter regularly published technical papers about glass. :!: See Everex.
  • Manulor in Meisenthal France knew Alfred from the time he was in Grevenmacher looking for possible work, takeover glassworks and/or investment. From the correspondence it appears that he doubted at one point but he had the Luisenhütte which was leased and 'am Fuchspad' as well and that became too much to handle at the same time. He was clearly looking for income because the content of his wallet was shrinking day by day, so to speak. Moving house, buying land, building, moving machinery, etc. all at the same time. Since Hemiksem he has not been able to score a positive result and that is beginning to weigh heavily. :!: See Manulor.

Daily life

In the photo gallery of the sidebar you will find some pictures of his daily life. You will notice that Alfred finds a bit of peace with his new partner, a widow he has been with for a number of years. As far as I can tell it has been an intense LAT relationship in modern terms.
Of course, an annual visa application is required, which makes it difficult for Alfred to move across borders. He cannot just go to his sister in Eindhoven without a visa. He was stateless. After World War II, Stalin gave orders to destroy the data of his compatriots who had fled the Eastern bloc. As a result, Alfred could no longer obtain a Czech passport at all, and he was actually a bit of an irregular migrant.
When Alfred reads articles in newspapers that confirm his vision, he cuts them out and keeps them. A little anecdote about this. “When was a doctor a good doctor for Alfred?” Simple, if the doctor gave him a disease that appealed to him, otherwise it was a bad doctor :-D.
