History

Back Next

1957 is an eventful and difficult year for Alfred. Financially, it was certainly not a windfall. He has been away from Hemiksem for five years and the end of the tunnel is not yet in sight.

Luisenhütte

The glassworks leased to Görgen is not going well. There are often financial problems that force Alfred to go and work at Görgen to try to turn the tide, but that doesn't work either. In order to survive you have to be able to produce, but you also have to be able to sell, and presumably the latter will have been a problem. In the end the court pronounced the evacuation by the tenant on 27.12.1957. It was in fact stipulated that if Görgen did not pay the rent on time, he had to evacuate the following month. :!: See clearance.

Am Fuchspfad

Due to the problems with his tenant in the Gottfried Kinkel Straße, it is difficult for Alfred to focus on his activities. As a result, the final balance sheet shows a loss of DEM 9,448.47 or € 19,929 (current value). :!: See balance sheet.

Grevenmacher

Due to the problems with his tenant in the Gottfried Kinkel Straße, it is difficult for Alfred to focus on his activities. As a result, the final balance sheet shows a loss of DEM 9,448.47 or € 19,929 (current value). :!: See insurance.

Customers

An Australian glass company contacts Alfred to sell proven compositions for ruby red glass. Alfred could make this kind of glass like no other. As far as I can see he did not go into this. :!: See ruby red glass..

Jochmann sr

He receives a sad letter from his friend Fritz. Gisela, a daughter of Fritz sr had emigrated to Australia just like her sister Helga with her husband Hubert. Gisela was back with her father after a while because she could not be treated for her glandular disease in Australia. Maybe it was lymphoma. As Gisela had no health insurance in Germany she had to pay the full amount. Father Fritz was recovering 12 years after the end of WWII when fate struck him. He indicated that he would have to increase his income and might take up the offer of a publisher to publish his experiences and compositions. He will only do this after talking to his son about it. Gisela cannot be cured and returns to Australia. Her father is left broken with the knowledge that his daughter is happy in Australia but that he will never see her again. Alfred doesn't have an easy life and is not financially well off, but he doesn't abandon his friend and helps him. :!: See Gisela.

Daily life

In spring Alfred takes a few days to recover in Luxembourg. For the rest it's work and trying to keep the train on track. In the meantime his (ex) wife has moved permanently and moved in with her new partner. In order to save as much money as possible he cancels his life insurance in August. 1957 is another witch's kettle. Stress, stress and the light at the end of the tunnel is not yet in sight :!: See daily life.
