History

Gottfried Kinkelstraße

  • The opening balance sheet will be drawn up on 01 January. The total assets amount to DEM 76,220.07 which represents today 169,676 €. :!: See opening balance.
  • Alfred is still trying to find out if he can't make Christmas decorations at competitive prices. He's enough businessman to realise that he can't do it. Christmas decorations are a seasonal product. You have to have serious financial backing to pre-finance production. Eastern European competition is too strong because of dumping prices, so he is gradually abandoning that dream. :!: See Christmas decorations.
  • Alfred lives in the 'In den Benden, 6' until April. The Glashütte 'Jola' is located directly opposite his residence 'In den Benden, 5'. In order to make his investment profitable, he subcontracts to blow signal lights (traffic lights, red lanterns hung on the last wagon of a train, etc.). Jola provides the wooden mould as well as the additives to colour the glass and give it a certain strength. The latter are invoiced to Alfred. Somehow, there is an intermediary between the two, so that his merits may not have been great but he could start and earn money to breathe life into his new glassworks. While he could look for other customers. :!: See Jola. The strange thing about the story is the addressing. Jola sends orders to the Glashütte am Gasometer which is the location of his last residence. With Alfred there is always fog. Did he do it deliberately or did he find the city registration accessory and did he do it when he once had 5 minutes? So far I haven't found any clues about that.

Am Fuchspfad

  • In Alfred's archives we find a ground plan of 'Am Fuchspfad' dated 18 May in which he is mentioned as the builder. What was his plan? Hard to say because I don't find many notes of that period probably due to lack of time. He was busy with 1001 things at the same time. :!: See ground plan.
  • It is clear that Alfred has other plans and leases his glass company “Luisenhütte” in the Gottfried Kinkel Straße to Karl Görgen, who may use the stocks present on payment of course. :!: See leasehold.
  • The land and dog taxes that have to be paid before 1955 can be found at the address 'am Gasometer', 'in den Benden' has been deleted. :!: See taxes.

An der Vogelroute

He will move from 'In den Benden' to this new location on 29 April. All the addresses in Euskirchen that Alfred has something to do with are in the same area.

Product range

Alfred tries to find out what products are being asked for, because glassblowing has no secret for him. From works of art to technological glass doesn't matter. He can do anything. “Alfred lebt Glass” by analogy with the Opel advertisement “Wir leben Autos”. His friend and business partner Fritz Jochmann is another such person. Both are impregnated with glassblowing. To get some insight he asks G. Géron in Brussels what the market is asking for. Géron is a trader who brings supply and demand together and lives from the commission. Traders are companies that have huge bins of cards in which they keep their addresses. As a manufacturer you often had no choice, the traders had the relationships and the customer and the supplier might not find each other directly or much more difficult. Today, Mr Google or Bing is the trader and has hundreds, if not thousands, of hits with a search term. :!: See Géron.

Daily life

Alfred is now busy blowing glass and has little time for anything else. From former employees in Grevenmacher he still receives several letters and cards. There too he was appreciated as a boss, just like in Hemiksem. He no longer hears anything from his wife, who has found peace with a new lover and leaves Alfred alone. When everything becomes stable in his life he will start writing down his wife's jealousy in his notes again, but that is only years later. When he reads an article in the newspaper about the Nazis he cuts it out promptly. When he hears or reads something about it he starts to losse his temper :!: See newspaper.
